Friends of the British Memorial Garden
THE UNITY SCULPTURE APPEAL

The British Memorial Garden grew out of the tragedy of the World Trade Center attacks and will honor the 67 British victims of the disaster. The Garden will celebrate the long-standing ties of friendship between the United States and the United Kingdom. The Park will be anchored at the south end by the Unity sculpture by world renowned leading British artist Anish Kapoor. The sculpture will be Kapoor's first public work in New York. Your support will enable us to realize the rare opportunity to place the work of a prominent sculptor in a public space in downtown New York.
The park is contributing to the revitalization of the downtown New York residential and business community through its combination of exceptional design for the Park, and important sculpture in a public space and an ongoing program of British-American cultural events.
All donations will be recorded in the official British Memorial Garden Trust Record of Donors, a bound historical record of the building of the Garden at Hanover Square. Additional recognition will be given to leading supporters. Recognition within the Garden will be made for contributions in excess of $50,000.
“The proposed memorial is for an object roughly 6 meters high by 2.5 meters wide by 1.5 meters deep. It is a block of black granite into which a vertical chamber is carved of approximately 1 meter by 2.5 meters by 80 centimeters in depth. The inner chamber is polished to give a mirrored surface. The chamber reflects light so as to form a column, which hovers, ghost-like, in the void of the stone. This very physically monolithic object then appears to create within itself an ephemeral reflection akin to an eternal flame.”
- Anish Kapoor
