THE BRITISH MEMORIAL GARDEN CORGI CONVENTION

On Saturday, June 28th, the first ever New York "Corgi Convention" was held in Riverside Park. Organized by the British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc., the Welsh Assembly Government and the New York City Dept. of Parks & Recreation, the event attracted 52 corgis and their owners. Famed dog trainer and animal behaviorist Bash Dibra led the corgis on a parade along the Hudson River from 72nd Street to the Boat Basin at 79th Street where a program of entertainment was provided for the attendees. Welsh soprano Rebecca Jenkins sang and leading corgi expert Sue King spoke on the history and care of the breed.

A "Corgi Star Pet" competition was held with the dogs judged for their star quality in three categories: charisma, obedience and behavorial tricks. The competition was judged by Mr. Dibra and the event was MC'd by British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc. president, Camilla Hellman. The "Corgi Star Pet" awards were presented by Borough of Manhattan Parks Commissioner William T. Castro. First prize was an exclusive knittted cashmere dog sweater donated by "Corgi Hosiery" of Wales. The Carlyle Hotel donated monogramed dog bowls as second prize. All four prize-winning corgis received "Star Pet" books autographed by author Bash Dibra, as well as corgi water color prints by noted dog artist Cathy Santiserio.

Refreshments were supplied by Llan Llyr Welsh water, Walkers Shortbread and gourmet cookies baked by Virginia Colifrinio. Each corgi owner recieved a gift bag filled with dog and human treats, including Gwdihw Dog Foot Balm and Robbie Dawg Gourmet Dog Biscuits.

SCOTLAND IN THE GARDEN

The British Memorial Garden Trust’s celebration of Scotland Week on April 4, 2008 began with a pipes and drums medley by the Pentland Caledonia Pipes & Drums Band. Trust president, Camilla G. Hellman, MBE, greeted the crowd gathered in Hanover Square and introduced MacTalla Mór, who sang the National Anthems of the United States, Great Britain and Scotland. The Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, Alex Fergusson, spoke about the links between America and Scotland, following a moving lament on bagpipes, “Lochaber No More,” played by Clan Chief MacLaren of MacLaren. MacTalla Mór played a rousing set of Scottish music, bringing the crowd to its feet. Commissioner William T. Castro, NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, spoke movingly of spring within the British Memorial Garden and his ties to Scotland. The crowd went wild when the Red Hot Chilli Pipers hit the stage with their blazing brand of bagpipe-flavored Celtic rock. Invest These Flowers
by Owen Shears

Invest these flowers
with no more in their name
than with their talent for returning
from the ashen soil again.

Do not mark with grief or prayer
their early bowing heads,
nor celebration or remembrance
in what their crowns and trumpets said.

There are no riches in their gold
nor youth in their green shoots.
There is no peace within their offering
nor brotherhood in their groups.

Their turning in the wind
is not their turning of a cheek.
Their leaning in the rain
is not their leaning down to weep.

Invest these flowers
with no more in their name
than with their talent for returning,
however long the winter, from the ashen soil again.
